"Organic is necessarily expensive" A common misconception...
Advertisers and major brands have clearly noticed that many people want to consume in a more sustainable way: by turning to more sustainable modes of consumption such as organic, vegan, ... They have therefore taken the liberty of using terms to gild their image in terms of composition, production methods and relationship with individuals.
Using the terms "handcrafted" "made in" "authentic recipe" "eco-recharge" when they are not certified by independent labels and certifications is meaningless. However, this has enabled many companies to inflate their prices by using these marketing arguments. So beware of these products! Only independent certifications such as Ecocert and Cosmébio can guarantee a healthy, organic composition.
But don't worry, healthy products made from natural and organic ingredients, certified and labeled and affordable, are possible. You just have to learn how to recognize them.
At Charlotte Bio, all our products (skincare and make-up) are Ecocert, Cosmebio, Cruelty free and Vegan certified, with the exception of our foundation, which is made from beeswax. How is this possible? We explain it all to you!
Team Charlotte's tips
Tips 1 : Total mastery of the value chain
When we think about the composition of our formulas, we focus on the origin and quality of raw materials , and do our utmost to obtain the best ingredients at the right price. Thanks to our expertise, we are able to control our supply costs and offer cosmetics made from traceable ingredients. This enables us to ensure quality, respect for workers and reduce our transport costs . What's more, we manufacture all our products in Italy and France. We have chosen our partners not only for their expertise in the field of organic cosmetics , but also for their location , to ensure the quality of their work and working conditions. As a result, your bb cream or foundation is produced as close to you as possible to reduce transport costs and our ecological footprint. Indeed, by producing locally and favoring short circuits wherever possible, we reduce our CO2 emissions. It also allows us to better trace every ingredient in our products.
Tips 3 : Reducing packaging
One of our main arguments is the drastic reduction in packaging. Our packaging is made of recycled PE from sugar cane or recycled cardboard. We also reduce over-packaging and ban plastic wherever possible. This has enabled us to reduce our waste by 5 tonnes since the company was founded.
In the same way, we don't offer samples. This allows us to reduce our environmental impact and achieve economies of scale, given that packaging and over-wrapping can cost up to 20% of the finished product's selling price.
Similarly, when we send out our orders, we only use recycled and recyclable components such as cardboard, recycled kraft or recycled PE. In addition to being good for our planet, these components are less expensive.
Tips 5 : Lower margins and marketing costs
Our commitment is to offer the best for you, at an affordable price, while respecting all stakeholders. By opting for local production, we make a social commitment to people we trust, and guarantee them a fair wage. We are also involved in causes that are close to our hearts, such as supporting disabled people to help them integrate into working life.
In making this choice, we have chosen to reduce our margins. We also don't incur inordinate advertising and marketing costs, thanks to our nugget team who are able to pull off feats to reduce our costs. 💪
And our best spokespeople are you. By telling your friends and family about our products, by sharing your looks on social networks, you're supporting a young, local and ethical company.
All these small actions have a big impact and enable us to offer you quality, certified organic and natural cosmetics at an affordable price. Now that you know, you'll be able to discern the real from the fake and give your skin what it deserves: healthy, pigmented cosmetics that smell great. Tips 2: Replace all harmful agents with natural ingredients and reduce the list of ingredients.
Many of the agents used in conventional make-up are derived from petrochemicals . What does this term mean? Petrochemistry is the manufacture of synthetic chemical processes . It requires a great deal of R&D and many complex processes usingingredients created or derived from rare and distant materials such as petroleum, to create synthetic materials and fragrances from scratch. In addition to being dangerous for the environment and people around them, as they are suspected of being endocrine disruptors and the source of cancer, these processes are very costly.
Organic cosmetics make do with what nature has to offer , creating ingredients that are (at least) as effective as organic make-up. Formulation is less costly because it is "simply" based on natural ingredients, and does not require complex processes: the emphasis is on gentle processes. What's more, vegetable oils replace silicones and parabens, and have numerous benefits for the skin: hydration, slower oxidation...
Reducing petrochemicals also means using fewer ingredients, only those needed, and making economies of scale.
Tips 4 : Certifications to ensure product quality
Before you can call a makeup product "organic", it has to meet a number of strict conditions. One of these is Cosmebio, the benchmark organic and natural cosmetics label. This label was created in 2002 to counter the growing trend towards greenwashing. It allows you to distinguish at a glance which cosmetics are truly natural or organic.
These are the guarantees:
A minimum composition of 95% ingredients of natural origin in the product as a whole, as well as a minimum of 95% organic ingredients in all plants and a minimum of 10% organic ingredients in the product as a whole. In addition, the Cosmebio label also guarantees the absence of ingredients that are harmful to health or the environment, by prohibiting the processes that allow them to exist. These important requirements cover the entire product life cycle:
From the origin of raw materials, to encourage ethical and sustainable sourcing, through to a gentle, non-polluting transformation process, numerous controls on the manufacture of the finished product (clean composition, packaging, storage): imposing the separation of different manufacturing processes, the establishment of separate storage areas to avoid any errors, the implementation of a strict quality control system and the absence of animal testing. COSMOS specifications also encourage eco-design of packaging to minimize environmental impact and preserve biodiversity. To achieve this, it calls for a reduction in the quantity of materials used, and a parallel increase in the quantity of recycled and recyclable materials. Only a restricted list of authorized materials: wood, glass, aluminum, plastic (PE, PET, PP, PETG), cardboard, PLA and any 100% natural material. Many materials are prohibited: PVS, polystyrene, and all other chlorinated and styrene-containing plastics, as well as materials produced from GMOs.
And finally, transparent labeling and responsible communication: requiring the presence of certification mentions, the presence of percentages of natural and organic origin, and the indication in the INCI list of ingredients from Organic Farming.
The COSMOS specifications also call for the implementation of a waste management plan to reduce, reuse and recycle waste, as well as a list of authorized cleaning and disinfecting products.
